Protect nature and give Lillebælt a sustainable future

Lillebælt is a unique piece of nature and is home to one of Denmark's largest nature parks with one of the world's densest populations of porpoises. But unfortunately, the Little Belt ecosystem is out of balance. Severe oxygen depletion threatens and life is dying below the surface. The eelgrass is dwindling. Crabs are outnumbered. Some fish species are endangered and porpoises have to work hard to find food.

Lillebælt Nature Park focuses on four main efforts that mutually reinforce each other:
  • We remove crabs because they destroy eelgrass and eat small fish and fry
  • We plant eelgrass to help fish fry survive
  • We create better spawning conditions in rivers and streams to ensure more sea trout fry
  • We restore stone reefs to increase spawning area survival rates

A belt in balance

The Little Belt is a unique piece of nature. But the Little Belt ecosystem is in trouble. And right now, the ecosystem is out of balance. Severe oxygen depletion threatens.

There are no cod or flatfish. Crabs are badly outnumbered. The eelgrass is dwindling. And without eelgrass, the fish fry have a hard time. At the same time, generations before us have removed many stone reefs in the belt. When the big fish are missing, crabs, for example, have no natural enemies and porpoises have difficulty finding food. It's a vicious circle that we can help to break, even with small measures. For example, when we work together to plant eelgrass, regulate crab populations, re-establish stone reefs, build fish nurseries and create better spawning conditions in rivers and streams.

Give something back to nature

We stand on the shoulders of the generations that came before us. And our children must live in the world we leave for them. Today, we humans have the power over nature. We influence the ability of all other living beings and systems on the planet to survive in the future. It's a huge responsibility that we haven't managed very well so far. We have consumed and taken from nature. It's time to give something back again

A strong local identity

The backbone of the effort is found in the area's strong local identity. It is supported by volunteers, socio-economic activities and strong communities for the benefit of nature.
